Roadworthy Certificates: What Are They?

In Queensland, roadworthy certificates are required in several situations. When selling or transferring the ownership of a registered vehicle, a roadworthy certificate is mandatory. They are also required when re-registering a vehicle that has been unregistered for 2 months or more, as well as when registering vehicles from interstate.

During a roadworthy inspection, various components are checked, including the brakes, tyres, lights and steering and suspension systems. This ensures vehicles on the road are safe and compliant with legal requirements, helping to keep drivers, passengers and other motorists safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ask a Question
  • When do I need a safety certificate?

In Queensland, a safety certificate is needed when:

    • A registered light vehicle is offered for sale in Queensland
    • Transferring the registration to a new owner
    • Registering a vehicle from another state or territory in Queensland
    • Re-registering an unregistered vehicle
  • What kinds of vehicles require a safety certificate?

Vehicles requiring a safety certificate are:

    • All cars
    • Motorcycles
    • Trailers (including caravans) with an aggregate trailer mass (ATM) between 750kg-4,500kg
    • Any other vehicles up to 4,500kg gross vehicle mass (GVM)
  • What do you cover in the inspection?

This inspection covers the basic vehicle safety standards for many components, including:

    • Tyres
    • Brakes
    • Steering
    • Suspension
    • Body rust or damage
    • Windscreen
    • Lights
  • Does a safety certificate mean my car's life expectancy is covered?

A safety certificate inspection is not a comprehensive mechanical inspection of a vehicle's quality or life expectancy. If you are buying a used car, contact a motoring group such as RACQ for a full mechanical inspection.

  • Can you inspect my vehicle today?

Bookings are essential to secure your spot. However, we will do our best to book you in as soon as possible at a time that suits you.

  • What happens if my car doesn’t pass the inspection?

If your vehicle fails the inspection, you have 14 days to rectify any issues listed and to call us back to schedule a re-inspection.

  • Do I have to pay for the re-inspection?

Unlike other companies, we do not charge for the re-inspection. Provided the re-inspection is done within 14 days of the first inspection (If you go outside the 14 days, a new inspection fee applies).

  • Can you do the repairs?

Yes, we can. We can provide you with a quote for the repairs on the same day or the following day if parts prices must be investigated. We can arrange for it to be taken back to our workshop to do the repairs necessary to complete your certificate.
